Presiding Members Danni Smith and Leeroy Bilney reflect on the end of their inaugural term.

As we reach the end of the inaugural term of the SA Voice, we take a moment to reflect on what has been achieved and to thank all members for their leadership, commitment, and service to community.

In just two years, the SA Voice has grown into a strong and respected advisory body, ensuring Aboriginal voices are heard in government decision-making. From Cabinet meetings to community engagement hearings, this work is helping create real change.

This hasn’t been an easy journey. Members have balanced family, work, and community responsibilities while continuing to show up and represent their regions with strength and dedication.

We are already seeing the impact of this work, with initiatives such as:

  • Bail accommodation support programs
  • Strengthened resources about Nunga Courts and other justice processes\
  • Culturally safe care models for people in custody
  • Safe Birthing on Country programs.

Importantly, work is also underway to co-design a new evaluation and accountability framework — helping ensure communities have a greater say in how success is defined and measured.

We acknowledge all members, past and present, and thank the communities, Elders, and families who have guided and supported this journey.

To those finishing their term—thank you for laying the foundations.

To those who return following this Saturday’s elections, along with new members who will join the SA Voice —the work goes on.

This is just the beginning. Together, we are showing what’s possible when our voices are heard.
